Two Medicine Gallery,
in Whitefish, Montana, is owned by Jeff and Judy Cornell. The gallery offers an unusual
combination of fine art, rare books and library antiques.
The idea for the gallery, which opened in 2001, grew from Jeff's interest in collecting
old and rare books about the West and sporting life. Jeff and Judy are hunters and
fishermen with a love of the West, and more than anything else, Two Medicine Gallery has
reflected this combination of life style and place.
The addition of fine art to Jeff's idea for a retail book business grew out of the
Cornells' friendships with Clyde Aspevig and Carol Guzman, Bob Barlow, and Roger Rink.
Adding antiques to the mix again reflected the couple's lifestyle, their own home décor
and interest in history. Library antiques seemed a natural fit with old books and fine
art, and the guiding thought was: if it doesn't sell, we can take it home!
The building which houses Two Medicine Gallery at 123 Central Avenue had
been owned by the couple since 1989. Built in 1903, the building itself further
contributed to the evolution of the gallery's atmosphere-with its high tin ceiling,
hardwood floor and battered wainscoting. During an expansion/remodel in the spring of
2006, an old bar was added to the gallery, bringing the building to full circle with its
original business, "Bailey & Co. Saloon." |
